This is based on a picture I saw all the time in my childhood home. It is a photo of my father working with a mass spectrometer. He was standing in for the person getting their photo taken so the photographer could get the shot set up, but got to keep the photo.

My father asked me to paint a portrait of him, and I felt like this image was a nice representation of him.
